Rafael Goldchain "On Family Ground"

‘on familial ground’ by rafael goldchain is an autobiographical installation work that includes digitally altered self-portrait photographs. however these self-portraits aren’t of goldchain. each one features the artist re-enacting ancestral figure from his family, many of whom are no longer alive. by dressing up in period costume and applying prosthetic makeup, goldchain mimics 56 of his relatives. the works were compiled in exhibitions and now are features in the book ‘I am my family’.

‘the self-portraits in ‘on familial ground’ suggest that we look at family photographs in order to know ourselves through the photographic trace left by the lost ancestral other.’
